As summer unfolds, many of us look forward to festive gatherings, backyard barbecues, and evenings around fire pits. However, these activities can pose significant burn risks if safety precautions aren’t taken seriously. Dr David Harrington, a burn care surgeon with Brown Surgical Associates and director of the Rhode Island Burn Center, shares simple steps to enjoy these summer traditions while reducing your chances of ending up in the emergency room, or worse.
Understanding the Risks
Fireworks and fire pits are common sources of burn injuries during summer. Improper handling of fireworks can lead to severe hand and facial burns, while unattended or improperly managed fire pits can cause accidental fires and injuries. Children and pets are particularly vulnerable in these settings.
Fireworks Safety Tips
-
Leave it to the Professionals: Attend public fireworks displays conducted by trained professionals.
-
Legal and Safe Use: If using consumer fireworks, ensure they are legal in your area and follow all safety guidelines.
-
Protective Measures: Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire.
-
Supervision: Never allow young children to handle fireworks. Older children should be closely supervised.
-
Proper Disposal: After fireworks have completed burning, douse them with plenty of water before discarding to prevent a trash fire.
Fire Pit Safety Guidelines
-
Placement: Set up fire pits at least 10 feet away from any structures or flammable materials.
-
Stable Surface: Ensure the fire pit is on a flat, stable surface to prevent tipping.
-
Supervision: Never leave a fire pit unattended, especially when children or pets are present.
-
Extinguishing Fires: Always have a fire extinguisher, water source, or sand nearby to extinguish the fire if necessary.
-
Avoid Accelerants: Do not use gasoline or other accelerants to start or maintain the fire.
In Case of a Burn Injury
If a burn occurs:
-
Cool the Burn: Immediately cool the burn under cool (not cold) running water for 10-15 minutes.
-
Protect the Area: Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth to protect the skin.
-
Seek Medical Attention: For more serious burns, especially those that are large, deep, or located on the face, hands, feet, or genitals, seek immediate medical care.
