PROVIDENCE, R.I. — At Brown Surgical Associates, our team of vascular surgeons is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for conditions affecting arteries and veins outside of the heart and skull base. One of those surgeons is Richard Anthony Meena, MD, RPVI, who brings advanced expertise, compassion, and a passion for building lasting relationships with his patients.
Treating a Wide Range of Vascular Conditions
Dr. Meena treats a broad spectrum of conditions, from carotid artery disease and peripheral artery disease (PAD) to aortic aneurysms, arterial blockages, and complex vein disorders. Many patients are referred to vascular surgeons by their cardiologists once issues develop in arteries of the neck, legs, or abdomen that require specialized care.
“Our goal is always to optimize a patient’s health with the right medications and ongoing monitoring first,” Dr. Meena explains. “But when surgical repair becomes necessary, we’re there to provide the most advanced procedures available.”
A Passion for Patient Relationships
Dr. Meena’s journey into vascular surgery began as a second-year medical student while shadowing a vascular surgeon at a Level 1 trauma center in Atlanta, Georgia.
“I was really impressed with his ability to form longitudinal relationships with his patients,” Dr. Meena recalls. “That’s something that drew me in very early.”
Vascular surgery appealed to Dr. Meena not only because of the complexity and variety of conditions treated, but also because of the combination of cutting-edge technology and traditional surgical techniques. This unique blend allows him to deliver the best possible outcomes for his patients.
Rooted in the Community
Originally from the South, Dr. Meena and his family have embraced life in Rhode Island since moving to the Ocean State.
“We love being so close to the water, the outdoor lifestyle, and the welcoming community here,” he says.
Dr. Meena trained at an academic center in Atlanta and, along with his wife (also in medicine), was drawn to Brown for its strong academic environment and commitment to high-quality patient care.
“We wanted to continue our careers in academic medicine, and Brown offered the perfect balance of excellent clinicians and a supportive community.”
Dedicated to Lifelong Care
What inspires Dr. Meena most about vascular surgery is the opportunity to follow patients throughout their lives, helping them manage their conditions and stay healthy for the long term.
“We grow with our patients,” he says. “We learn what they need and help them along the way. That’s something I’m very passionate about.”
