Bariatric Surgery Nutrition in Rhode Island
Nutritional support following major surgery is a primary concern for medical staff attending to postoperative patients, especially those with underlying illness. Studies have shown that malnutrition can affect outcomes in surgical patients; it can cause serious postop complications and impede healing and functional recovery.
While early oral feeding is the preferred method for nutrition following surgery, it may not be possible for all patients. Some surgical patients may require nutritional therapy via enteral nutrition (tube feeding) or parenteral nutrition (intravenous delivery of calories and nutrients). Patients having gastrointestinal or thoracic surgery are especially at risk for needing short-term or long-term non-oral nutritional support.
Bariatric surgery nutrition is a multidisciplinary specialty that offers coordinated care, both in the hospital and at home, for adults with complex nutritional needs.
