Dr. Konstantinos P. Economopoulos is a Minimally Invasive Surgeon with a focus on bariatric (weight loss), foregut (esophageal problems) and abdominal wall reconstruction (hernia) surgery. He earned a medical degree and a doctoral degree in molecular biology from the University of Athens, in Greece. He completed his surgical residency at Duke University, and an advanced laparoscopic, bariatric and minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Economopoulos also received a master’s degree in biomedical engineering with focus on medical device design from Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering.
He has experience in basic science, clinical and translational research with fellowships at the Athens Medical Center, Hygeia, Prolepsis Medical Group, Massachusetts General Hospital and MGH Institute for Technology Assessment. He has an extensive peer-reviewed publication record with more than 120 articles, 6,000 citations and an H-index of 45. He is a dedicated mentor of many college students, medical students and surgical residents in the US and abroad.
He holds several patents for medical technologies and is passionate about innovation and medical device design. His research efforts focus on new technology in laparoscopic, robotic and endoscopic surgery and the crosstalk between engineers and surgeons.
